Influence of Emotional Stimuli on Working Memory in Schizophrenia: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

|
The purpose of the present study was to examine how emotional stimuli affect on working memory performance in schizophrenia. The participants were 11 patients with schizophrenia and 11 healthy control individuals who matched in gender and age. All participants performed several self-report, short form of Korean-Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale(K-WAIS) and 2-back task. 2-back task was composed the general 2-back task as digit stimuli and the emotional 2-back task that was included happy, anger and neutral facial expressions. The results was no significant difference of subjective experience of emotion and general 2-back task performance between groups. In addition, there were no significant difference of correct response rates(%) and reaction time in the emotional 2-back task using negative and neutral facial expression stimulus between groups. However, there was a significant difference of correct response rate(%) in the emotional 2-back task using positive facial expression stimulus between groups. These results suggested that schizophrenia group was less accurate for positive stimuli than healthy control group. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
